With Style #2: Modern, I feel that the buttons could get lost in the UI.

I look at it this way: Style #1: Traditional (gel like button) tabs are better. Why?  There is a simple answer: 99.9% (if not 100%) of ALL drop down menus in OS X, and apps for OS X, are of the traditional &quot;gel like button&quot; design. The actual look of a &quot;button&quot; draws your attention to it, increasing the chance of being clicked.

And, since there are a few places (I count 6 total) where Color Schemer Studio has drop down menus in the UI, why not keep things consistent. ;)
