need help with color matching

Hi all,      I am having trouble for the first time in my life  lol  with finding the right color for a room in my house.  I am re-doing my living room.  I have white/oak furniture, which can really go with anything.  My problem is the walls, right now they are white. I want to paint the wall behind my sofa and the hallway that leads to the bedrooms which is next to the wall behind the sofa, so i think both walls have to be the same color.  The problem i am having is in the room and in the hallway the carpeting is a shade of rose/mauve.  The sofa is mocha in color, looks great against the carpet, but for some reason i can not find the right color for the walls. I have tried a few, Monet from Ben Moore, came out pink, and I tried Comfort from behr paint from Home depot, that came out looking like the color of a band-aid.  Does anyone know of a good color that will match with the carpet?  I am trying to go with the brown/beige family but i think i may have to wind up with a green.  I dont want it pastel but i dont want it very dark. So if anyone can come up with a brown/neutral family color or a green, i would be very happy. I am new to this site, so i may not find any replies, so if you can please post here and also to me directly  i am at jerseymeadow@verizon.net    THANK YOU !!!!

Re: need help with color matching

hey interesting dilema.

oak and white are a gorgous color, and mauve color carpet seems realy odd. Maybe when looking at paint sample look for a warm gray (think brushed aluminum or even a little more like favorite heathery gray wool pants). I say this because gray and mauve are both toned down colors and gray and white are monochromatic, the wood will be tricky so a warm gray is really important so you really need that hint of cream to accuentate the yellowed tones in the wood.

for something with more color a deminy blue could be an accent on the wall but not a whole wall it would compete with the mauve carpet.

for ethnic inspiration take a look at morrocan pottery or even fashion from spainish royalty in renisannce-ish times or 1700

hope this helps

Re: need help with color matching

Hi Tammy! Personally, I would lose the carpet and go with some beautiful white oak flooring to really brighten the room and then you will not have to worry about your walls-carpet matching. By giving up the carpet, it will be possible for you to paint the walls in any tone. Give it a thought and if you decide to go along with my suggestion, I found a great, inexpensive offer from where you can buy some beautiful white oak floors http://www.businesslinkup.co.uk/detail.php?id=2715.

I think dark color can be match with the light colors..you can also get colors that can be match of  like the primary one..the red, yellow and blue.

Re: need help with color matching

the color I suggest is called greige. It is a neutral color that is a mix between beige and grey. During the day is looks like a taupe beige and at night, looks like grey. It's stunning. This will downplay the mauve. Add black and silver accessories and you'll soon love your new space. i hope it helps you , Good luck
